Rust Console Update 1.16 Patch Notes: Quality of Life, Storage Box DLC & Overground Trains Preview

September 24, 2026141 views

Rust Console Edition Update 1.16 is live with the September wipe, and it is a big quality of life pass: an engine upgrade, the long-requested ability to unclaim sleeping bags and beds, better Treasure Box spawns, and a long list of fixes for Minicopters, Caves, Flame Turrets and more. Landing alongside it is the new Storage Box DLC, and on the horizon there is a lot to be excited about: Overground Trains hits the Public Test Branch in October, and Halloween returns to the island. Here is the full breakdown.

Rust Console Edition Update 1.16 patch notes

Server performance and stability

Before the new content, Double Eleven called out something a lot of players have been asking for: server performance. A dedicated team is now focused on making the communication between the game and the servers faster and more efficient, for a smoother and more stable experience. This touches some of the most fundamental parts of how the game talks to its servers, so it is not an overnight fix, but it is a major focus, and a deeper behind-the-scenes look is promised in the late-October Dev Blog.

Overground Trains hit the PTB (October 6 to 22)

Rust Console Edition Overground Trains coming to the Public Test Branch

After the strong reception to Underground Trains, the railway is heading aboveground. From October 6 to October 22 you can test the next chapter on the Public Test Branch across 100, 150 and 200 player servers. It is more than a new trainline and locomotives: ziplines, changes to Train Yard, Traveling Vendors and more are coming too, giving you fresh ways to move around the island and switch up your routes. Jump in, take the trains for a spin, and send feedback before it ships.

Storage Box DLC (out now)

Rust Console Edition Storage Box DLC skins

The Storage Box DLC makes its debut with this wipe. It is a collection of 16 unique skins built to make organising your base easier and your storage rooms cleaner, with dedicated designs for weapons, armor, explosives, resources, food, tools and components. Check it out on your platform store.

Halloween returns (October 15 to November 4)

Spooky season is back. From October 15 through November 4, the seasonal chaos returns: the Trick or Treat event, your friend Frankenstein, and mysterious Ghost Portals scattered across the map. Expect new seasonal skins plus returning fan favorites, and a hint that a new DLC might be lurking in the shadows.

Quality of Life update: the highlights

The headline of this wipe is polish. The standout changes:

  • Unity Engine upgraded to version 6.3.
  • Unclaim sleeping bags and beds. Delete or unclaim them by holding SQUARE / X.
  • Better Treasure Box spawns so they no longer appear inside existing objects.
  • Fixes for Minicopters, Caves and Flame Turrets, and improved player-and-door interaction.

One 1.16 note for builders and PvP servers, High External Walls and Gate snapping can now be disabled, which is worth knowing when you set up your rules. New to running a server? Then list your server free or grab paid placement to sit at the top for the wipe rush.

Bottom line

Looking ahead, Overground Trains arrive on the Public Test Branch from October 6 to 22, and Halloween returns October 15. It is a great time to jump back in or get your server in front of a fresh wave of players.
